A long afternoon of meetings later, I was finally making my way down the last stretch of Highway 101, nearing Shawna’s house. I looked at the beaming ocean, and I couldn’t wait to put my toes in the sand. As I pulled into the garage, I could hear Harvey’s excited woofs coming from inside the house. When I opened the door, I was greeted by his cheerful demeanor and wagging back end. He was adorable and very happy to see me.

“Hi there, Harvey.” I reached down to pat the little guy.

He briefly made eye contact, then looked past me as if waiting for Shawna to appear. “Sorry, Harvey. It’s just me today.”

He looked me in the eye, then once again toward the door before a resigned huff turned him around. “Hey, don’t be so disappointed, I may not be the mamma, but I am the one who is going to take you for a walk.”

Harvey’s floppy ears perked at my comment and one of them stood at attention. His little body shook as he circled around my feet. “You like going for walks, don’t you?”

He woofed playfully as he followed me up the few stairs and into the sprawling kitchen that hung over the sea. Priscilla must have heard all the excitement, for she sauntered into the room and wove her way through my feet. Her sweet mews filled the space while her yellow-green eyes implored. She jumped to the barstool and sat regally, but the mewing never ceased. Someone wanted attention. I stroked her smooth grey fur and listened to her prattle on in that sweet kitty voice of hers. “Are you missing your mamma, big kitty?” The cat let out one final meow then purred.

I put their dinner bowls together and settled them on the ground. Harvey came running, but stopped shy when he got close to Priscilla. The cat looked at him, and a warning expression seemed to pass between them. I moved Harvey’s a few feet from hers and this solved the problem. Harvey quickly gobbled up the contents of his bowl and Priscilla followed. “Ok guys, I’ll be back after I change.” The pets were unaffected by my words and they continued eating without so much as a backwards glance.

I left them to it and made my way back through the garage and into the incredible new world that was once a dingy basement. Removing my work clothes, I pulled on a pair of running shorts and a tank top before collecting my phone.
